I used to think I had to do everything from scratch for it to be ‘done properly’ and this included making my own pizza bases. They were really nice, but as my time got filled up with work and other stuff I went back to buying shop pizza bases, or on a bad day a ready made pizza. So as you can see, I’m not perfect when it comes to trying to be frugal – I just keep trying to follow the Frugal Hill Way.
My bread maker instruction book has lots of different recipes in it and I am being braver about trying new things out. I’ve had a go at pizza dough a few times and it works really well. I just put all the ingredients in and set it off – it only takes about 45 minutes. Last night after work I had to take Bee to a residential weekend and then do the shopping. I didn’t get home until nearly 6pm and still managed to do this quite easily.
I usually roll the dough out into a rectangle which can be divided into 6 portions. Last night I just spread a tin of tomatoes over the base and added some cheese and olives. If I have a bit more time, I prefer to cook a tomato sauce. I fry a small onion, add tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and a teaspoon of oregano and just simmer for 10 minutes. This makes a thicker sauce.
We ate half the pizza last night (OH had two portions) and I’ve put the other half in the freezer for next week – so I’m saving lots of money.
Until next time, Tawney
