And can I say welcome to everyone who has paid a first visit to Frugal Hill in the last couple of days.
I had a very interesting conversation this evening. I was late home from work, and then had to head to the supermarket for our weekly shop. It was 7.30 by the time I had finished, and I’m afraid I gave in and went to the chip shop. I’m feeling a bit guilty – I could have been more organised and had something ready to heat up for when I got home.
There was nobody in the little chip shop we go to, so I had time to chat with the two women who run it. We started talking about how we are all saving money. One of the women told me about how she hadn’t put up so many lights this Christmas. I shared how we were turning off the heating an hour and a half earlier – they were doing this too. The other woman then told me how, come 6 o’clock, the traffic stops on the main road now.
“People aren’t going out for a drive in the evening and then getting chips anymore, and they’re also not going out for a drive at the weekend. They’re trying to save money on petrol.”
I guess this cuts both ways because although everyone is trying to save money, there is an impact on small businesses like the chip shop as they get fewer customers. I don’t know what the answer is to this. What I do think is interesting is that clearly more and more people are looking for ways to cut down on their spending just as we are.
Have you had any interesting conversations about frugal living recently?
Until next time, Tawney x
