I posted a while back about my struggles with technology in setting up my blog. One of my friends is thinking of setting up a blog as part of her new business, and I’ve been able to show her how I muddled through, and hopefully save her a bit of time as a result of the lessons learned from my mistakes.
I have signed up with all sorts of things like Gravatar, Openid etc, etc, all of which have their own passwords and usernames. I thought I was being clever by using different passwords and usernames until tonight when I forgot my Gravatar password and username – oops. Eventually it came back to me. And this blog is supposed to be about my journey to a simpler life?
I’ve also had difficulty in commenting on Blogger blogs recently. Basically, if you have a self hosted website (as FHW is) you have to be ‘verified’ before you can post a comment. There are various ways of doing this, but what I had been using suddenly stopped working and coming up with error messages. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve spent hours looking for the answer. Whilst I don’t think I have found what went wrong, by hunting on the internet and editing the code on my site, I seem to have got it working again. Apologies to any fellow bloggers if I have accidentally commented more than once on your site – I am not a technical expert at all.
It feels exhausting when I am so out my comfort zone trying to find the answer to this kind of problem. I naturally gravitate towards the arts and languages, not maths and computers.
My next challenge is to work out how to put a favicon on my blog. Just got to work out what a root directory is – somehow I don’t think it has anything to do with vegetables.
Have you ever taken on anything where you’ve felt really out of your depth? How did it work out?
Until next time, Tawney x
