I did it!

Hello Friends,

I had some really great news this week – I passed my grade 4 violin exam.

Working towards the goal of passing this exam taught me a lot.  First, it’s never too late to start learning something new.  I didn’t learn an instrument as a child – I only started learning 5 years ago when I was into my 40s, so I was a complete beginner.  OH plays the piano, and Bea and Edie both play 2 instruments, so I felt I had to join in too.

The second thing I’ve learned is how to do something just for the sheer joy of it.  I just love playing (although my family probably didn’t love it quite so much in the early days!).  It doesn’t matter that I’m not brilliant, or that I don’t do it professionally, I just love losing myself in music.

The third thing I’ve learned is how to reach a goal by just taking tiny steps.  I have to squeeze in my practice wherever I can, sometimes late in the evening, sometimes very early in the morning before I go to work.

What interests or hobbies have you taken up as an adult?

Until next time, Tawney x

  1. I wasn’t so successful in taking up the violin again. I used to play many years ago and recently I actually bought myself a violin, looking forward to playing again.
Unfortunately, my dog didn’t appreciate the sounds issuing forth and after a few minutes of scales, he started to howl!
My violin now resides at the back of my wardrobe. 🙁

  2. Thats fabulous news Tawney – well done you.

Mine is riding – I used to ride until I was around 16 and then stopped, taking it up again about 4 years ago. I love it – time for just me.

I also started knitting again – I used to knit when I was in my teens (my nan taught me) but then stopped. I find it a real escape – just sit and engross myself in what I am doing.
